Alasdair Darroch’s Great Grandfather

My great great grandfather Ensign Duncan Darroch (1800–1889) was in the 20th Regiment on St Helena during the captivity of Napoleon. He arrived on the Camel on 29th February 1820 and left shortly after the death of Napoleon in May 1822.
He wrote a number of interesting letters to his mother in Scotland recording the end of Napoleon’s life, his death and the funeral, which he helped to arrange. He took as keepsakes some of his hair and a piece of lint dipped in his blood. Sadly the keepsakes and the original letters do not survive.
Letter written from Ensign Duncan Darroch to his mother, May 6th 1821.
His son, also Duncan Darroch (1836–1926), studied at Trinity and rowed in the boat race in 1858 when Cambridge won and in 1859 when they sank. His name is on a board in the First and Third Boat House.
